Pharmacy links the health sciences with the chemical sciences, and it deals with ensuring the safe and effective use of medication. The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to patient care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists are highly-trained experts on drug therapy, drug delivery and skilled healthcare professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes.
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for pharmacists will continue to increase into the 21st century so the roles of the pharmacist are expanding.
Pharmacists have opportunities to:

  • Care for patients' drug-related needs in community pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home health care settings.
  • Design the new drugs, delivery systems and devise new ways to administer drugs.
  • Educate the pharmacy students.
  • Conduct research in colleges and universities and drug companies.
  • Work in government health agencies.
  • Manage the pharmacy services for large health maintenance organizations.

A Bachelor of Pharmacy (abbreviated B.Pharm) is an undergraduate academic degree in the field of pharmacy. The degree is a basic prerequisite, in many countries, for registration to practice as a pharmacist.
Pharmacists are trained in pharmacology, pharmacognosy, chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacy practice (including drug interactions, medicine monitoring, medication management), pharmaceutics, dispensing, manufacturing and industrial pharmacy, pharmacy law, physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, kinetics, patho physiology, Advanced Mathematics, Biostatistics, Computer applications and compounding medications.
